A beautiful 19th/20th century brass Ottoman pen holder with inkwell; a so-called 'divit'. The lid of this 'divit' is shaped like a shell and the pen case is decorated with floral patterns along its entire length.
The divit, as this pen holder with inkwell is called, was a must-have for any educated inhabitant of the Ottoman empire. Where ever you were and whoever you were, with this divit you could always write something. Normally, a metal divit consists of an oblong case for the reed pen, and a square or round inkwell attached to this pen case. Originally, a wad of rough silk was placed inside the inkwell, to soak up and store the ink like a sponge. This way, the ink could never spill.
