1934, printed in Belgium
Old Prayer Book from 1934 with its mahogany case.
The Missal is in perfect condition, the pictures are protected with a transparent sheet allowing to keep all the brilliance of the colours.
The head, fore-edge and tail of the Missal slice are gilded.
The mahogany case is a bit damaged (picture attached), but nothing too serious.
The box is adorned inside with an off-white embossed satin fabric.
The number of edges to gild?
The edges gilding was a delicate step of the old bookbinding and could be entrusted to the most important workshops, a book-edge gilder. It consisted in ‘adorning the edge of a book with a thin layer of gold leaf, and by extension to decorate them with other processes’ like the jasper, marbling, chiselling.
Gilding, in addition to its aesthetic appearance, protects the edges of the paper making them less fragile and avoiding dirt and dust. All edges are gilded with gold.
Delicate issue, as described in the ‘Dictionnaire encyclopédique du livre’ (encyclopedic dictionary of the book) which says that usually, only the head is gilded for a half-binding. Both head and fore-edge are gilded in usual full-binding. All three edges are gilded for full luxury bindings.
