Brass/koper Russian Orthodox cross, 20th century - Russia
A very special antique cross from the Russian Orthodox Church.
dimensions: 26 x 13 x 0.5 cm.
Condition: excellent.
Date: the first crosses date from the 19th century. In the 20th century casts have also been made. This cross has been particularly well preserved, was found completely weathered and has been recently cleaned. The result: see pictures. It is hard to tell from which period this dates exactly.
Text on front of the cross is in Russian;
Translated as:
At the top of the mandylion: " From cloth not made by human hands "
The small upper cross beam is a K, a magnification of the shelf above Jesus’s head, with inscription in three languages
"Jesus, the Nazarene, King of the Jews" (with initial letters JNRI)
In the middle of this, a cross with the crucified Christ is depicted. His head bears the known aureole, with the following letters in cross shape: "Ho Oon": He who is.
At the bottom, a cave is pictured with a skull: the traditional image of Jesus was crucified on the rock, where our ancestor Adam was buried.
The Russian text on the cross reads, translated:
" Holy Cross, protector of the world
"", sign of the power of the heavenly King
"", power of the believers
"", you will be serenaded with the praise of the angels
"" you overcome the Evil
Holy King, Jesus Christ, Son of God "
On the left and right the sun and moon are also shown in Russian, and under the outstretched arm of Jesus is inscribed, translated; " For your cross, King, we kneel down,
We glorify your resurrection. "
The feet are shown sideways, which is different from the common cross images in the Catholic Church.
On the back is more text about Christ.
Will be shipped well packaged.
