Original hand-painted Thangka (Size: 76 cm x 53 cm.) - Tibet - late 19th century/early 20th century
Good condition
This is a carefully drawn, painted then gilded painting that illustrates the life of the Buddha. It is painted on a special tibetan material which is a mixture added to cotton.
The thangkas are mainly used as a means for helping meditation in monasteries, stupas as well as at home, in the altar room.
They are rarely dated or signed, usually a text can be found on the back as in this case.
Defining the exact date of the paintings is difficult because of the strict traditional fixity of the theme,
the depiction and the symbolism. The outline of the figures are drawn with charcoal/lead pencil.
The mineral pigments are blended with lime and gluten. Typical colours are limestone-white,
arzenic-yellow, poison green, crimson, blue, ultramairne, indigo. Gold is used for decoration"
In order to give life to the thangka, it needs to be blessed by the lama.
After the blessing ceremony it is not only a painting anymore,
it becomes a powerful spiritual tool that is able to heal and purify.
Size: 76 cm x 53 cm.
